Maine: There’s More Than Lobster Here

Published: December 2, 2020

Lobster is unquestionably one of the most iconic things about Maine. The freshest lobster in the world can be found in roadside stands and elegant, white tablecloth restaurants. You’ll find lobster bisque, lobster macaroni and cheese, whole lobsters, and everything in between. We recommend that you try it all. The area has over 50 restaurants to choose from, so once you’ve had your fill of lobster be sure to check out some of our favorite places.

Maine is famous for its coastline and islands. Italy is also famous for its coastal towns and Mediterranean climate. Diners can enjoy a taste of Italy right in Boothbay at Ports of Italy. Sante Calandri, the restauranteur, spent years working in the food industry in Trevi, Rome, and Perugia in Italy. When he moved to the United States, he joined restaurants in New York City’s Little Italy. We are lucky that he brought his authentic Italian dishes to Boothbay. The restaurant specializes in homemade pasta, ravioli, bread, focaccia, and desserts. They feature an extensive wine list. Be sure to check out their sister restaurant Ports Pizzeria.

The chef and owner of Carriage House Restaurant, Kelly Patrick Farrin, took great care to honor the legacy of the favorite gathering spot for locals. The building sat vacant for 15 years before he re-established the business in 2016. The walls are filled with nautical details and old-time photographs. People familiar with the area will often see a family member’s boat in one of the pictures. The menu features seasonal farm to table ingredients. The first floor houses a quiet dining room. Head upstairs to find two bars and a lively atmosphere. This is one of the few restaurants that stays open year-round.

Venture to Coastal Prime for breathtaking views of the harbor. Watch the boats go by or make a reservation at the perfect time for a romantic sunset. The restaurant boasts a seaside deck and bar for alfresco dining. They can even bring the outdoors to the inside with a unique folding wall system that creates an open-air dining room. Fire pits and vertical heaters give comfort into the fall season. The menu boasts some of the freshest seafood around but also features steak, sushi, and specialty cocktails.

Did we mention that we also have fantastic oysters? Head to King Eider’s Pub in nearby Damariscotta for oysters on the half shell, oysters Rockefeller, or a mouth-tingling horseradish oyster shooter. This old English pub in an historic building will make you want to move here and become a regular. Fill a handmade mug with a local brew in the welcoming pub or peruse the extensive wine list in the upstairs dining room.

Can’t decide and want to try a little bit of everything? Book a Maine Foodie Tour and let them guide you through a culinary showcase. Bring your appetite and your waking shoes for a few hours of information, food, and fun.
