Freeport is the place to go if you want to shop. The city is famous for having hundreds of brand-name outlets and local boutiques. The most famous shop is L.L. Bean’s flagship store on Main Street. The store has been open for over a century and offers activities alongside their signature apparel, camping gear, and home furnishings. Visiting the store is an experience guests will not forget. Take a photo beside the giant boot outside. Visit with the fish in the riverbed aquarium. The campus has multiple buildings including an entire building devoted to biking, boating, and skiing; and an entire wing dedicated to hunting and fishing. Centered between the buildings is the Discovery Park. Become a true Bean Outsider by participating in one of the numerous Outdoor Discovery Programs. L.L. Bean is the original outfitter for outdoor recreation in Maine.
You can’t go wrong with the dining options in Freeport. We especially enjoy the Tuscan Bistro right on Main Street for lunch or dinner. They feature mouth watering brick oven pizzas and house made pasta. Try a few brews at the Brickyard Hollow Brewing Company and always save room for dessert with ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s.
Of course, Freeport offers more than just shopping and food. Did you know there is a desert in Maine? Formed by glacial outwash during the Ice Age, the Desert of Maine features 30 acres of sand dunes. Take a self-guided tour to learn about the history and science of the area.
Another quick escape from the downtown area is Leon Gorman Park. The eight-acre park is only a few blocks from the downtown area. A half-mile loop trail is a great place to stretch your legs. Be aware that, while short, parts of the trail are quite steep.
No vacation is complete without chocolate. Visit Wilbur’s of Maine to pick up molded chocolates, chocolate sauce, fudge, and more. The family owned and operated establishment has been in business since 1983; a time when there were only two outlet stores in Freeport. The factory also presents tours and special events.
The Freeport Bird Supply is more than just a store. A fully stocked feeding station attracts many local birds and a few surprises. A hummingbird and butterfly garden provides an opportunity to view those dainty creatures. While you are there, pick up some birdseed, binoculars, a natural history book, or certified bird-friendly coffee.
If you’re looking for a side trip on the way to Freeport, make time to explore the Maine Maritime Museum. The museum is located on the grounds of the Bath Iron Works which has the honor of building some of the Navy’s newest destroyers. The museum itself features indoor galleries, the country’s last remaining and carefully preserved wooden shipyard, a working boat shop, and a restored 1906 schooner. A highlight of the indoor exhibits is the opportunity to feel like you are standing atop a lighthouse in the immersive Into the Lantern: A Lighthouse Experience. Daily cruises from the museum boast views of iconic lighthouses and an up-close look at Naval vessels currently under construction.
