Long vacations and weekend getaways are great opportunities to live a bit of a different life for a short period of time. You can try new foods, see interesting places, and not worry about household chores. One thing that you should consider maintaining from your regular life is your exercise routine. Yoga has been shown to have many positive effects on the body. Some of the positive attributes of practicing yoga are especially helpful while on vacation.
- Yoga will help you get the most out of your day. Doing a few poses in the morning helps your body wake up and prepare for the day. You will be much better prepared for a full day of sightseeing and exploring. On the flipside, incorporating yoga into your bedtime routine helps your body unwind. Many people report difficulty sleeping while on vacation. Yoga helps your mind relax so you can get the rest needed to really enjoy your time away from home.
- Yoga helps to release stress. Travel is a lot of fun but can also be disorienting. There are travel timetables, new cities to navigate, and lots of social interaction. The stressors of travel can increase cortisol levels in the body. Yoga is an easy way to decrease those levels and give your brain a bit of relief.
- Yoga can prevent illness. Add a new environment with the potential for different colds and allergens to the stress of travel and you have the recipe for a miserable time. Yoga can boost the immune system as it reduces cortisol levels therefore making your body more ready to fight off whatever the person next to you on the plane was sneezing about.
- Yoga shortens the effects of jet lag. Doing minimal poses that allow the body to relax provides the opportunity to catch up into the new time zone. Think of jet lag as stress and yoga as the breather you need to calm down.
