Known by many as “The Boating Capital of New England,” Boothbay’s deep water port is a natural gem. It is home to historic lighthouses, public islands, and plentiful wildlife. The harbor attracts mega-yachts, lobstermen, windjammers, and other boaters seeking camaraderie and quiet ambiance.
One of the best ways to explore our beautiful harbor is from the water. Sightseeing via kayak gives you the chance to slow down and get close to all there is to see. You don’t have to be a bird-watching enthusiast to be thrilled by seeing majestic herons, mesmerizing ospreys, and noble eagles. If mammals are more your style, the harbor is home to one of the most active harbor seal colonies in the area. Being in a kayak gives you the opportunity to slip in and out of waterways or stop to stretch your legs on a secluded island.

Paddle to Burnt Island Lighthouse on the Harbor Tour. The three-hour round-trip tour offers spectacular views of the second-oldest surviving lighthouse in the state, the expansive sea from an ocean bluff, and the magic of lobster boats and they navigate in and out of the harbor. A stop at the island gives everyone a chance to meander along paths and stretch of their legs.
If you want a change of pace for an afternoon, try the Wildlife Tour. This adventure traverses secluded waters on the way to Ram Island on the Sheepscot River. Waterbirds and harbor seals are frequently seen on this tour. The views of coastal Maine can’t be beat. Midway through the four-hour tour, guests are treated to a snack while taking a break on Ram Island.
Lastly, add a little romance to your paddling journey on a Sunset Tour. The porpoises and osprey seem content to put on a show with their evening activity. The colors of the sunset provide a gorgeous backdrop for the windjammers returning to port. This truly is one of the most beautiful and invigorating times to be on the water.
Never kayaked before? Don’t worry! Kayaking can be enjoyed by everyone. No experience is necessary and the sport features a long list of benefits. Aside from the obvious advantage of being a healthy activity, kayaking is a social sport. You can easily chat with friends while exploring the waterways together. Young kids can take part when they join an adult in a tandem kayak. It’s easy to take breaks to capture natural beauty on a waterproof camera. You can explore multiple locations or return to the same spot, either way you’ll see new things every time you venture out.
