Make Dining an Experience with a Maine Clambake

Published: February 27, 2023

Seafood is plentiful when you are in Boothbay Harbor. The waterfront is teeming with restaurants with gorgeous views and menus full of delectable options. We certainly advise that you try your fair share of the restaurants in town. But this is Maine and sit-down restaurants are not your only option. When you are ready to add to your dining experience, we highly recommend a Cabbage Island Clambake.

What is a clambake?

A clambake is a Northeastern traditional way of cooking that saves all of the natural, delicious flavors of clams, lobster, corn on the cob, onions, potatoes, and eggs. Everything is covered with layers of seaweed then cooked over an open fire along the water’s edge. A tarpaulin covers the whole process so none of the flavor escapes. It is outdoor cooking that mingles with the scent of the sea and the sounds of the water. The result is a meal you will remember for a lifetime.

Clambakes have been held on Cabbage Island since 1947. The Leavitt Family held twice daily clambakes for 23 years. After a short break, and a change of hands in ownership of the island, the clambakes started up again in 1989. The Moore Family is thrilled to have continued the very popular tradition.

You will not leave a Cabbage Island Clambake hungry. All ticketed adults receive fish chowder, two lobsters, one pound of clams, corn on the cob, a potato, an onion, and an egg. The famous Maine blueberries are baked into a cake for dessert. Coffee, tea, iced tea, and water are all available to wash everything down.

What if I don’t like seafood?

We recognize that lobster and clams are not beloved by everyone but you can still join in the fun. Roasted half chicken is available for landlubbers. And you still get to enjoy the boat ride and the views.

A kids meal of chowder, hot dogs, and chips is available for those young picky eaters. We are certain they will dive in when they see the blueberry cake.

Is there alcohol available?

A full cash bar is available on the island. Please note that credit and debit cards are not accepted. Outside alcohol is not permitted.

Is everything outside?

There are indoor and outdoor dining options available on the island. Take your pick based on your preferences and based on the weather that particular day. The Bennie Alice also has indoor options. Stand outside and feel the breeze in your hair as you traverse to the island or sit comfortably inside.

How will I get to the island?

The trip to the island is half of the fun. Guests board the Bennie Alice at Pier 6 in Boothbay Harbor. From there, you enjoy a narrated cruise across to the private island. Along the way you will see lighthouses. Playful seals may be swimming around the boat. Water birds will be flying overhead. Forget riding in a limousine to dinner, this is Maine’s version of riding in style.

Is there anything else to do on the island?

Yes! Cabbage Island is a 5 ½ acre private island in Linekin Bay. After you enjoy your meal, you can explore the wooded trails or walk along the shore. If you are feeling competitive, you can play horseshoes, badminton, or volleyball. If you just want to relax, there are plenty of shady spots to sit and let your food digest while you enjoy the views. Don’t forget your camera. You will definitely want to document the boat trip, the meal, and the island.

Is this a lunch activity or a dinner activity?

It can be either one. The boat departs every day from Boothbay Harbor at 12:30pm and returns at 4:30pm. On Saturdays and Sundays, there is an additional experience that departs at 5:00pm and returns at 8:45pm. Both time slots offer the same meal.

Cabbage Island Clambakes are available seven days a week from mid-June until Labor Day.

This sounds great! How do I join the fun?

Reservations are strongly recommended for the Cabbage Island Clambakes. The trip and dinner often sell out. Call them at 207-633-7200 or visit the bright yellow ticket booth at 22 Commercial Street. If your group is eight people or less, you can book your reservation online through the handy reservation system.
